Material Technician

Job Summary: The Material Technician is responsible for ensuring the quality and compliance of incoming aluminum scrap materials. This role focuses on performing inspections, collecting and analyzing samples, and supporting plant operations through accurate testing and reporting. The technician plays a critical role in identifying contamination, verifying moisture content, and maintaining overall material quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform UBC moisture inspections on incoming scrap deliveries to support accurate deduction and melt loss control.
  • Collect representative samples from incoming materials to evaluate contamination and overall quality.
  • Conduct industrial lab testing, including:
    • Operation of lab ovens for moisture determination
    • Use of weigh scales and other testing equipment
  • Accurately record, analyze, and communicate test results through quality reports.
  • Perform visual inspections of incoming scrap at outdoor receiving docks to identify non-conforming materials.
  • Act as a spotter and guide for trucks, including directing drivers delivering loose loads into designated areas safely.
  • Identify, document, and escalate incoming scrap quality concerns to Quality Manager.
  • Collaborate with operations, unloading teams, and receiving team to ensure efficient and safe material handling.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment in quality lab and dock areas.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to material quality and inspection processes.

 

Qualifications:

  • Required high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Preferred 2-4-year degree with emphasis on science, business administration, or technical field.
  • Experience with SAP is highly preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing, recycling, or quality inspection environments is a plus.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and email communication.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately collect and record data.
  • Ability to work both indoors (lab setting) and outdoors (dock environment) in varying conditions.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and operate in an industrial environment.

Constellium Muscle Shoals is a major aluminum sheet supplier for the packaging and automotive markets. The plant has ~1,200 employees and more than 100 acres under room, including five casting units, hot and cold rolling mills, and a slitting and finishing center. Muscle Shoals produces aluminum sheet for use in all three components of beverage cans (body stock, coated end stock, tab stock) and has the capacity to produce over 1 billion pounds per year of finished aluminum coils. The plant also produces aluminum automotive coils to be processed at our CALP line in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Muscle Shoals’ world-class recycling center is able to recycle the equivalent of 20 billion aluminum cans per year.
