Maintenance Technician 1

Job Summary: Maintenance Technician Level 1 is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining manufacturing equipment used in the facility. The technician performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities while supporting safety, quality, production uptime, and continuous improvement objectives. This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and is located at our Van Buren Twp., MI manufacturing site, which is part of our Automotive Structures & Industry business unit.


Responsibilities

 

Equipment Breakdown – the responsibilities of this position are progressive in nature and build upon the skills, knowledge, and duties of the Maintenance Tech Trainee role.

 

  • Independently troubleshoot and repair routine equipment breakdowns.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Support production by responding promptly to equipment failures.
  • Assist with equipment installations, modifications, and improvements.
  • Communicate equipment issues, repair status, and corrective actions to stakeholders.

 

Proactive Equipment Activities – the responsibilities of this position are progressive in nature and build upon the skills, knowledge, and duties of the Maintenance Tech Trainee role.

 

  • Independently perform assigned preventive maintenance activities.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify emerging reliability concerns.
  • Assist in predictive maintenance activities and basic equipment inspections.
  • Recommend improvements to PM procedures and maintenance practices.
  • Support 5S, safety, and equipment improvement initiatives.

 

Personal Development – the responsibilities of this position are progressive in nature and build upon the skills, knowledge, and duties of the Maintenance Tech Trainee role.

 

  • Progress through the ToolingU maintenance training program. 
  • Expand knowledge of automated manufacturing systems.
  • Develop proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Learn basic PLC diagnostics and automated equipment operation.
  • Develop root cause analysis and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Build understanding of automotive manufacturing processes and quality requirements.
  • All other duties assigned by the supervision and necessary to perform the job. 

 

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • 1 – 3 years of industrial maintenance and/or manufacturing experience, required.
  • Technical school, apprenticeship, vocational training, or associate degree, preferred.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, programming, and repairing robotics, PLC, pneumatics, hydraulics, welding applications and CNC machines, required.
  • PLC diagnostics (Allen-Bradley and Siemens preferred).
  • Robot maintenance knowledge (FANUC and ABB preferred).
  • Conveyor and material handling system maintenance, required.
  • Ability to read electrical prints and technical documentation, required.
  • Computerized maintenance management system (PLEX) experience, preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office, preferred.
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools, required.
  • Follow ISO 14001, 9001, 45001, and IATF 16949 requirements.
  • Understanding of mechanics, industrial electrical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and preventative maintenance concepts, preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug test, and pre-employment exam, required.

Essential Functions/Working Conditions

  • Work performed in a manufacturing/production environment
  • Exposure to machinery, materials, and testing equipment
  • Ability to lift, push or pull 25 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for 8 hours
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a Jaeger near vision acuity test to verify the ability to perform close-detail work such as inspection, assembly, and quality checks, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety and quality standards
